Screening Tools and Assessments for Social Emotional Learning

"School Based Occupational Therapy" Retrieved from: https://www.ptsrehab.com/ot-month-helping-children-within-the-schools/
Scope of Practice
Promote Engage Advocate
Occupational Therapists are trained and have expertise in promoting function and occupational engagement of all students in school participation.

Within the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework Domain and Practice, OTs address activities of daily living (ADLs), rest and sleep. play, social participation, and education.

OTs are skilled in environmental and technology adaptations to promote occupational performance.

OTs can provide greater insight into underlying factors that might be affecting the student's participation.

OTs can advocate for interventions from school staff and administrators.
(The AOTA Response to Intervention Workgroup, 2012b)
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA
As a primary service under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA), occupational therapy practitioners collaborate with early childhood and school teams to promote the physical, communication, cognitive, adaptive, and social-emotional domains of infants and toddlers. As a related service under Part B of IDEA and a pupil service under Elementary and Secondary Education Act (also known as No Child Left Behind), occupational therapy practitioners support children and youth by promoting participation in home, school, and community life. (The AOTA Response to Intervention Workgroup, 2012b. "Scope of Pracice")
Professional Qualifications
School-based practice is a critical component within every OT curriculum. Within the IDEA, OTs can provide services that include "developmental, corrective, and other supportive services as required to assist a child who benefits from special education". (The AOTA Response to Intervention Workgroup, 2012b. "Professional Preparation and Qualifications")
A Team Approach
OTs can work in collaboration with a team to address the needs and goals of students. The team will often engage in a process to identify the problem, generate a hypothesis for the reasoning for the problem, develop and implement a plan, and evaluate the effectiveness of the plan. (Fuchs et al., 2003 as cited in The AOTA Response to Intervention Workgroup, 2012b).
